Scrapbooks related to Clifford M. Ulp and the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1944). Ulp served as a faculty member and then the director of the Institute's art and design program from 1921 to 1952. The scrapbooks contain clippings and various pieces of ephemera such as event programs and invitations. The Clifford M. Ulp scrapbooks consist of items related to the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI) and its history. Although Ulp served as the director of the art and design program at the Institute, many of the items predate Ulp's time at RAMI. Each of the two volumes contains news clippings as well as assorted pieces of ephemera such as event programs, invitations, and promotional materials.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Clifford McCormick Ulp (1885-1957) was born in 1885 to George and Cordelia (maiden name Brown) Ulp. After attending Rochester's East High School, he graduated from the School of Applied Art at the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI) in 1908. RAMI was renamed the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1944.
